Are these lights good for soft coral?
I’m a experience saltwater reef hobbist, but I never dealed with anything under 125 gallons with coral…
I bought a 10 gallon tank I’m making into a soft coral frag only tank.(no fish) It comes with 2 incandescent 15 watt bulbs. So its 30 watts of light for 10 gallons. I’m not putting any SPS coral in it. Only low lighting need coral like Red/Blue Mushroom corals and kenya trees/Colt coral and polyps.
Are those light bulbs good enough for those LOW lighting needs of that coral? Really all Iwould like is shrooms and kenya trees, and I know those don’t need high lighting. So are my lights OK?
Don’t say something dumb like I need metal halide or T5′s for a 10 gallon. I won’t waste money on a new light fixture.
Incandescent bulbs are completely useless for growing anything, let alone something as light-demanding as corals. As you should already know, different types of light create different amounts of usable light per watt – incandescent are the worst because they create almost no usable light. Even a couple watts of MH will outperform 30 watts of incandescent.
As another user pointed out, the 50/50 CFLs from Coralife (Zoo Med also makes them) are your best option if you don’t want to buy a new fixture. In addition to the 10 watt bulb in the link, a 20 watt version of the bulb also exists, which would be more useful. Still, buying a new T5HO fixture would be your best option. Even though they’ll cost more at the start, the aforementioned CFLs don’t last very long, and you’ll likely find yourself wasting more money replacing them regularly than you would with a T5HO.
