is 800 lumens enough for growing coral?
i have a led par 38 bulb and it produces 800 lumens would this be enough to grow coral in a ten gallon ?
im cosidering on now buying a led panel that produces 1500 lumen and it has blue and white lights its used to grow plants indooor and also for aquarium use would these be better
I am guessing this is a spot lamp that is made for use in interior house lighting. Do you know what color spectrum the bulb produces? From what I have seen, these bulbs come in a variety of colors, something towards the white/blue spectrum would be best suited for coral. If you only have one go with white not pure blue. Any of the other colors would probably grow algae much better than coral. 800 lumens should provide sufficient light intensity to grow some species of coral in a 10 gallon tank, but considering that these bulbs are not intended for this purpose, time will tell. I am all for DIY aquarium projects, but whenever you experiment with unproven equipment you are risking the health of your livestock. When it comes to mini reef aquariums, proper equipment will help alleviate many potential problems. Is this your first reef tank? If so, a ten gallon tank will be more difficult to maintain than a larger tank as stability is key for marine aquariums. Some of the expenses of keeping reef tanks can be mitigated, but using only “cheap” equipment usually leads to a great cost in loss of livestock and can make the hobby seem impossible. I never like to discourage anyone from keeping reef tanks, I just want you to understand that it isn’t a cheap hobby even when keeping a small tank.
The best advice I can give to anyone thinking about starting their first marine aquarium is to do plenty of research before you buy anything. Be patient. The ocean has been around for a little while, so recreating a mini ocean in your living room will require time and knowledge. There is a whole lot of horrible information on marine tanks out there on the internet so it is best to read some books from expert authors, find some experienced reef keepers to learn from/with, and find a good fish store with knowledgeable employees. The internet is a good source of info too, just don’t believe everything the armchair experts post on their blogs.
