Is a 380watt Metal Halide too much for my 30gal salt aquarium?
I planned on doing soft corals and anemones – I wasn’t really planning on doing hard corals. Would this light fry everything? Or should I do a standard 130w?
Mars Hill – I cannot find a MH or a T5 in a 30″
I think that’s too much light for a 30 gallon. 380W on a tank that size would create heat and evaporation problems. If you are only keeping soft corals and anemones, I would go with a good T-5 fixture instead. Soft corals really don’t need that much light (too much light may actually cause them to bleach), and the more hardy anemones (like the Bubble Tip and Long Tentacle) will do fine under T-5s. A T-5 fixture will also give you more flexibility when it comes to choosing bulbs. If you still decide to go the Metal Halide route, then I would go with a 150W fixture.
