can i use a metal halide 250 watts an a 55 watt compact florecent bulb for my 55 gallon reef tank?
That would be fine for most corals. Put the ones that need high light under the halide, and ones that need medium to low light in the shaded areas at the bottom or edges of the tank.
If you are worried about too much light, know I run 250 watt halides on my nano tanks that are below 30 gallons. If you are worried about too little, the sides will be a little dim but the center or wherever you put the halide will be nice and bright.
Forget watts per gallon as it was a generic way to try to calculate Lumens over area and is super outdated with all the new lighting types. It is all relative to distance from a light and the output of the light. A coral 6 inches below a 250 watt halide gets the same light regardless if the tank is 10 gallons or 1000 gallons.
