Welding Question from a Novice?
The seat on my Toro Z5000 lawn tractor is attached at the front by two bolts that allow the seat to lifted forward to work on the engine. It also serves as the safety cutoff so that if pressure isn’t put on the seat, the tractor wont start. It looks like the thin metal frame was stamped to create a bolting point for the seat. One of these thin metal plates broke off and needs to be welded back on. Does anyone know what the best type of weld would be for this situation. I hope I explained it okay. Basically the metal is bent from the frame at a 90′ angle and has a bolt hole in it for a bolt. I need to reattach this 90′ bend. I guess I need to sand away the black finish back to bare metal & then what? Thanks!
Before you do any work you need to protect the mower from any sparks that may be created as it will ignite the gas fumes if any are present. I would then sand or grind the paint back ~ 3/4″ – 1″ on all sides. Keeping the seat attached (for location of the original hole) place some tacks on ether side of the crack. Then remove the seat to finish the weld. Also you must be very careful if you use mig as again it will produce “sparks” that will set things on fire. I would tig weld it because no “sparks” when welding (but most people don’t readily have access to a tig machine). If you don’t have access to tig then mig is the way to go but be careful look where the sparks will go and weld it outside so you don’t burn the house/garage down. Good luck!
