what colour/mix of colour’d LED should I use to grow lettuce? radish? potato? tomato? indoors
For all of those, you want full-spectrum light. I’d recommend HPS instead of LED, but that’s just a matter of watt to lux efficiency. Well, that and HPS are just cheaper too – although hotter.
The big question is are you supplementing a window, or doing just artificial lights? Glass eliminates nearly 100% of ultraviolet, but barely touches the red spectrum. So growing near a window where you still get 4 or 5 hours of weak daylight during the wintertime is a lot different from growing in an enclosed room. Simple ultra-v growlights are all you need during the winter in a sun-room, that and heat.
Lettuce’s handle artificial light well, although it quickly gets leggy. Most of the solancea families are poor choices for artificial light, but for potato, you need to deliver over 10k lux artificially to get good tuber formation, which will cost and arm and a leg. Radish, turnip and brassica all handle low-light very well.
Heat is the other point. Optimal growing temp is between 64 and 82 for most food crops. You’ve got a big range in grow points here, radish grows well below 60 degrees, but potato will not take off until minimum daily temp is over 75. Bottom heating via mat is okay for starting seed, but foliar temperature is what is important when determining fruit-set and stem thickness.
